If seen, politics is the name of reconciliation. Popular political leaders of the world have always tried to unite the nation and that is why politicians have always faced anti-peace elements. A good politician tries his best to create harmony among the people but there are some corridors in power politics where politicians have to face mortal danger.
Similarly, politicians around the world have become targets of extremism and terrorism. The murderous attack on the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Imran Khan in recent days, in which he remained safe, is a link in the same chain, which has been going on for decades. This is the same thinking that the country is targeting. Liaquat Ali Khan and Benazir Bhutto have also become Prime Ministers.
Let us take a brief look at the events of this type that happened in the past.
1. Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan – 1951
Liaquat Ali Khan, the long-time friend of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam, and the First Prime Minister of Pakistan, was assassinated in a public meeting at Company Bagh in Rawalpindi on October 16, 1951.
Syed Akbar, an Afghan, sitting in the front row of the meeting hall, killed Prime Minister Liaquat Ali. Fired two shots at Khan. Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan was rushed to the military hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
After the assassination of Liaquat Ali Khan, Company Bagh was renamed as Liaquat Bagh. In the same Liaquat Bagh, after 56 years, another Prime Minister Ms. Benazir Bhutto was also killed.
2. Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan – 1958
Dr. Khan Sahib mistakenly known as Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan is considered as a left-wing politician. Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan was the former Chief Minister of West Pakistan and the founder and the president of the Republican Party.
On May 9, 1958, he was killed in Lahore. Atta Muhammad, the murderer of Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan, was arrested and tried and executed on February 10, 1961.
3. Shahid Ali Patwari – 1958
Shahid Ali Patwari was elected Deputy Speaker of East Pakistan Assembly in 1955. At that time, Awami League was in power in East Pakistan and Shahid Ali Patwari belonged to the coalition party of this government.
On September 21, 1958, Deputy Speaker Shahid Ali Patwari was injured during a scuffle between members of the East Pakistan Assembly and died shortly after.
After this incident, President Sikandar Mirza ended the Awami League government in East Pakistan and dissolved the assembly and imposed martial law throughout the country.
4. Hasan Nasir – 1960
On August 9, 1960, Hasan Nasir was arrested and imprisoned in the prison of Shahi Qila Lahore, and on November 13, 1960, the famous revolutionary leader of Pakistan Hussain Nasir lost his life in the same prison. Hassan Nasir belonged to a prominent nationalist family of Hyderabad.
Hassan Nasir was born on August 2, 1928. He did his senior Cambridge from Hyderabad and higher education from Aligarh Muslim University. After the establishment of Pakistan, Hassan Nasir came to Karachi where he joined the Communist Party of Pakistan.
5. Malik Amir Muhammad Khan – 1967
On November 26, 1967, the former governor of West Pakistan, Nawab of Kalabagh, Malik Amir Muhammad Khan, was mysteriously murdered. He played a key role in the success of Ayub Khan in the elections of 1962 and 1965.
Before becoming the Governor of West Pakistan, he was also the Chairman of PIDC and Food and Agriculture Commission. On June 1, 1960, he assumed the post of Governor of West Pakistan. He held this position till 18 September 1966.
6. Abdul Muneem Khan – 1971
Abdul Maneem Khan was a lawyer by profession and in 1935 he joined the All India Muslim League. Abdul Muneem Khan was the governor of East Pakistan from 1962 to 1969. He was the longest governor of East Pakistan.
On October 13, 1971, there was a murderous attack on him. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in injured condition but could not survive. The attack took place when the freedom movement in Bangladesh was at its peak.
7. Dr. Nazir Ahmed – 1972
Dr. Nazir Ahmed was born on February 12, 1929 in Jalandhar district. After the establishment of Pakistan, he settled in DG Khan. Dr. Nazir Ahmed was a homeopathic doctor by profession.
On June 8, 1972, Naib Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Punjab and Member of National Assembly Dr. Nazir Ahmed was shot dead in his clinic in Dera Ghazi Khan.
8. Khawaja Muhammad Rafiq – 1972
Khawaja Muhammad Rafiq was born in Amritsar on December 1927. Khawaja Muhammad Rafiq was also in charge of the election campaign of Mother Nation Fatima Jinnah. He also had to spend time in jails in Lahore, Multan, Sahiwal and Bahawalpur due to political differences.
On December 20, 1972, Khawaja Muhammad Rafiq was shot dead by some armed men behind the Assembly Hall in Lahore when he was returning with his workers after a protest meeting.
9. Hayat Muhammad Khan Sherpao – 1975
Hayat Muhammad Khan Sherpao was the former governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Initially, Hayat Muhammad Sherpao was in Council Muslim League, later he joined People’s Party and was also the President of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa People’s Party.
Hayat Mohammad Khan Sherpao was the current president of Qaumi Watan Party and former Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao was his brother.
On February 8, 1975, the senior minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was killed in a bomb blast while attending a meeting of Peshawar University.
10. Arbab Sikandar Khan Khalil – 1982
Former Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Arbab Sikander Khel, prominent leader of National Awami and National Democratic Party, was killed on March 8, 1982 in the outskirts of Peshawar.
Arbab Khalil remained associated with the Congress till 1943, later he joined the Muslim League and worked for the creation of Pakistan.
In 1949 Arbab Sikander Khel joined Awami Muslim League. In 1956, Arbab Khalil joined the Awami Muslim League and then remained associated with the National Awami Party.
11. Zahoor-Ul-Hasan Bhopali – 1982
Zahoorul Hasan Bhopali was elected as a member of the Sindh Assembly on the ticket of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam in the general elections of 1970. He was active in the Pakistan National Unity Movement against the Bhutto government.
In 1981, General Zia-ul-Haq made him a member of Majlis Shura. On September 13, 1982, Zahoorul Hasan Bhopali was murdered in his own office.
12. Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi – 1981
Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi is considered to be one of the most underrated politicians of the country. Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi was elected as the Chairman of Gujarat District Board in 1958. Apart from this, he was also in the Board of Directors of National Bank of Pakistan.
He was also a member of the National Assembly from 1962 to 1965 and from 1972 to 1977. Chaudhry Zahoor Lahi was also the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Party of the Muslim League. On September 25, 1981, Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi was killed by unknown gunmen in Lahore.
13. Shah Nawaz Bhutto – 1985
Shahnawaz Bhutto was the younger son of former Prime Minister Zulqaffar Ali Bhutto and brother of former Prime Minister Ms. Benazir Bhutto. After his father’s arrest in September 1977, Shahnawaz Bhutto went to London on his father’s instructions.
After the execution of his father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Shah Nawaz Bhutto founded an organization Zulfiqar. Shahnawaz Bhutto died mysteriously in her flat in Cannes, France on July 18, 1985.
A month later, on August 21, 1985, Ms. Benazir Bhutto buried her brother Shahnawaz Bhutto next to her father.
14. Fazil Rahu – 1987
Fazil Rahu is considered to be an important political leader in the politics of Sindh. Fazil Rahu was born in 1934 in Rahu village of Badin district. Fazil Rahu formally started his politics with the BD election (Basic Democrat) held in 1962.
He spent seven years in jail during his political career. Fazil Rahu was killed by a kalahari on January 17, 1987 in Golarchi city of Badin district. His murder is known as personal enmity.
15. Sardar Ghous Bakhsh Raisani – 1987
Sardar Ghos Bakhsh Raisani was elected as a member of the West Pakistan Assembly for the first time in 1966. After joining the Pakistan People’s Party in 1971, he was also the first Civil Governor of Balochistan from 29 September 1971 to 2 April 1972.
Sardar Ghos Bakhsh Raisani was successful in the 1977 elections and became a senior minister in the Balochistan Assembly. In 1986, he joined National People’s Party and became the President of National People’s Party Balochistan.
On May 26, 1987, Sardar Ghos Bakhsh Raisani, chief and political leader of the Raisani tribe of Balochistan, was killed along with five bodyguards.
16. General (Rtd) Fazal Haq – 1991
General (Rtd) Fazal Haq held the post of Martial Law Administrator, Governor and Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the regime of General Zia-ul-Haq. General (Rtd) Fazal Haq was also a member of Senate and National Assembly.
On October 3, 1991, General (R) Fazal Haq was returning to his home after the meeting of the Provincial Assembly in Peshawar when armed men opened fire on his car, killing him on the spot.
17. Azeem Ahmed Tariq – 1993
Azeem Ahmed Tariq was the founding leader and chairman of the Mahajir Qaumi Movement. When the military operation against the Muhajir Qaumi Movement began in June 1992, Azeem Ahmed Tariq went into hiding and appeared in public on November 29, 1992.
On April 22, 1993, Azeem Ahmed Tariq appeared in court in connection with a case where he was abused by angry MQM workers, but Azim Ahmad Khan announced that he would forgive them. Azeem Ahmed Tariq was killed by unknown persons in his house in Karachi Federal B area on May 1, 1993.
18. Ghulam Haider Wyne – 1993
Ghulam Haider was the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1990 to 1993 during the second term of government of Nawaz Sharif. On September 29, 1993, Ghulam Haider Wayan, former Chief Minister of Punjab, president of Muslim League Punjab and candidate of National Assembly Constituency NA-123, was going to Nisarpur from Mian Chanu along with a few colleagues in connection with his election campaign.
He was killed on September 29, 1993 by firing. Muhammad Zaman alias Zamani, the killer of Ghulam Haider Wayan, was sentenced to death on October 15, 2015 almost 22 years after the latter was shot dead at an election rally. Five other convicted men were also hanged in three jails in Punjab.
19. Murtaza Bhutto – 1996
Murtaza Bhutto was the son of former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and the brother of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Murtaza Bhutto founded an organization Zulfiqar after the death of his father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
On July 7, 1996, Murtaza Bhutto’s sister and at that time met Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto after seven years at the Prime Minister’s House. Murtaza Bhutto was returning to his home in Karachi Clifton after a press conference on 20 September 1996 when he was killed along with six other party workers near his residence.
20. Chaudhry Muhammad Farooq – 2002
Former Law Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Farooq was a member of the Punjab Assembly from 1988 to 1997 and again in 2002. During the period from 1993 to 1997, Chaudhry Muhammad Farooq was the provincial president of the Muslim League Punjab, as well as the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs.
On December 29, 2002, Chaudhry Farooq and his associates were killed allegedly on the basis of election grudges while returning from a Khatam Chehlum.
21. Muhammad Binyamin Rizvi – 2004
Pir Binyamin Rizvi was elected Member of Punjab Assembly under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif in 1991 and served as an advisor to the Chief Minister of Punjab. After winning again in the 1997 elections, he was appointed as the Minister of Population and Women’s Development and Administrator of the Treasury in the Punjab government.
Pir Binyamin Rizvi was also the Vice President of Muslim League (N) Punjab. On June 26, 2004, two unknown motorcycle-riding terrorists shot him dead.
22. Faridullah Khan – 2005
Former federal minister and senator from South Waziristan Faridullah Khan was killed by terrorists on May 29, 2005 in Jandola, sixty kilometers from Wana.
The assailants opened fire on Faridullah Khan’s car, killing Faridullah Khan and his driver on the spot. Faridullah Khan was known as a pro-government chieftain in South Waziristan.
23. Zill-e-Huma Usman – 2007
Zille Huma Usman, born on 16 September 1971, was known as an activist for women’s rights in Pakistani politics.
On February 20, 2007, Provincial Minister for Social Welfare Zille Huma Usman was attending an event at the Muslim League House in Gujranwala when a person opened fire on her, in which she was seriously injured.
After the firing, she was given medical aid and sent to Lahore, where she died during the operation.
24. Abdul Raziq Bugti – 2007
Abdul Raziq Bugti was the media consultant of former Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Muhammad Yusuf and spokesperson of the provincial government. On July 27, 2007, he was shot dead by the terrorist organization Balochistan Liberation Army.
Abdul Raziq Bugti had received death threats in the past as well, but he continued his duties as the spokesperson of the Balochistan government. After the death of Nawab Akbar Bugti, he played an important role in the media on behalf of the government.
25. Ms. Benazir Bhutto – 2007
Ms. Benazir Bhutto was Prime Minister of Pakistan twice. She was also the first woman Prime Minister of the Muslim Ummah. On December 27, 2007, after a political rally in Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, Ms. Benazir Bhutto was shot and committed suicide immediately after the shooting.
More than 20 people including Benazir Bhutto were killed in this blast. Earlier, on October 18, 2007, after Benazir Bhutto’s return from exile, there was a suicide bombing in which Benazir Bhutto remained safe, but at least 130 people were killed and more than 400 people were injured.
26. Miangul Asfandyar Amir Zeb – 2007
Miangul Asfandyar Amir Zeb was the grandson of Amirzeb Wali Mian Gul Jahanzeb of Swat and grandson of former President Ayub Khan. Mian Gul Asfandyar Amir Zeb had been a member of the Provincial Assembly, Provincial Minister of Education and the District Nazim of Swat.
Miangul Asfandyar Amir Zeb was returning from a meeting in the hilly area of Mungur with his colleagues during the election campaign that on December 28, 2007. Militants targeted his vehicle with a remote control bomb in which he was killed along with his companions.
27. Hussain Ali Yousufi – 2009
Hussain Ali Yousufi was a politician of Hazara descent in Balochistan. Hussain Ali Yousufi was the chairman of the Hazara Democratic Party and a member of the city council of Quetta.
Hussain Ali Yousufi was a member of the City Council from 1983 to 1987. On January 26, 2009, when he got out of his car on Shahra Jinnah Road, Quetta, unknown persons shot and killed him.
28. Mir Rustam Jamali – 2009
Rustam Jamali won the 2008 general elections as an independent candidate from Jafarabad and later he unconditionally supported the People’s Party. Rustam Jamali was the Excise and Taxation Minister of Balochistan.
On August 6, 2009, provincial minister Mir Rustam Khan Jamali was killed by unknown gunmen in Gulistan-e-Johar, a suburb of Karachi.
29. Habib Jalib Baloch – 2010
Former senator Habib Jalib Baloch was the central secretary general of BNP and senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He was elected senator in March 1997 on the platform of BNP Mengal Hai.
On July 14, 2010, Habib Jalib Baloch was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on Sariab Road in Quetta.
30. Raza Haider – 2010
Muttahida Qaumi Movement Member of Sindh Assembly Raza Haider was shot and killed by unknown motorcyclists while attending a funeral prayer in Karachi on August 2, 2010.
In this incident, Member of Sindh Assembly Raza Haider, his bodyguard and an activist were killed. Died. After this murder, riots and demonstrations took place in various cities of Sindh, including Karachi, as a result of which 32 people were killed and more than 100 people were injured.
31. Imran Farooq – 2010
Imran Farooq was considered among the founding leaders of Muttahida Qaumi Movement. MQM leader Imran Farooq, who has been a part of the party since its foundation, was the only general secretary of the party.
On September 16, 2010, Imran Farooq was murdered outside his house in Green Lane, Edgware, London, United Kingdom.
32. Mir Nooruddin Mengal – 2010
The central leader of Balochistan National Party, Mir Nooruddin Mengal, was shot dead by unknown persons in Qalat on 13 October 2010.
33. Salman Taseer –2011
Salman Taseer was elected as a member of the Punjab Assembly on the ticket of the People’s Party in the 1988 elections. Salman Taseer was considered a close associate of Ms. Benazir Bhutto.
On May 15, 2008, Salman Taseer was appointed as the Governor of Punjab. Salman Taseer, a senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party and Governor of Punjab, was shot dead on January 4, 2011 in Kohsar Market of F6, Islamabad.
34. Shahbaz Bhatti – 2011
Shahbaz Bhatti was the chairman of All Pakistan Minorities Alliance and the head of Christian Liberation Front. He joined Pakistan Peoples Party in 2002. Shahbaz Bhatti was elected a member of the National Assembly on behalf of the Pakistan People’s Party in the 2008 general elections.
On November 2, 2008, she became the first minority minister of the Federal Assembly. On March 2, 2011, Shahbaz Bhatti was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Islamabad. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the murder.
35. Bashir Ahmad Bilour – 2012
Bashir Ahmad Bilor was one of the major politicians of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On December 22, 2012, Bashir Ahmad Bilor was heading to his car to return home after attending a corner meeting at Awami National Party leader Sher Khan’s house in Peshawar when he was hit by a suicide attack.
In this suicide attack, nine people including Bashir Ahmad Bilour were killed while 18 people were injured. The responsibility for the killing of Bashir Ahmad Bilour was also accepted by the Taliban.
36. Syed Manzar Imam – 2013
Syed Manzar Imam was associated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement since 1986. He was elected member of Sindh Assembly in 2008 general elections on MQM ticket from PS95.
On January 17, 2013, in Orangi Town area of Karachi, terrorists opened fire on the car of Member of Sindh Assembly Syed Manzar Imam, as a result of which he was killed along with three bodyguards. After the incident, the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the killing of Manzar Imam, later the Tehreek-e-Taliban accepted it.
37. Zahra Shahid Hussain – 2013
Zahra Shahid Hussain was the senior vice president of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh Women’s Wing. Zahra Shahid Hussain was shot and killed by motorcycle-riding armed men outside her house in Defense on 18 May 2013.
The murder of Zahra Shahid Hussain took place during the Tehreek-e-Insaaf’s ongoing protest against alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections in Karachi Defense and Clifton constituencies. Protest on his killing continued for several days on behalf of Tehreek-e-Insaf.
38. Farid Khan – 2013
Farid Khan decided to participate as an independent in the 2013 general elections on the slogan of “peace”. In the 2013 general elections, Farid Khan won as an independent candidate from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly seat PK-42 and joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf.
On June 3, 2013, Farid Khan, Member of Provincial Assembly, was shot dead by unknown armed men in Hangu city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
39. Imran Khan Mohmand – 2013
Imran Khan Mohmand won the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Constituency PK-27 Mardan in the 2013 general elections. On June 18, 2013, he was killed in an explosion during a funeral prayer in Mardan.
In this bomb blast, 34 people including Member of Provincial Assembly Imran Mohmand were killed while 68 people including JUI(F) leader Maulana Qasim were injured.
40. Sajid Qureshi – 2013
Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Sajid Qureshi was elected MPA from Karachi constituency PS 103 in 2013 general elections.
On June 21, 2013, he was killed in Karachi’s Nazimabad area when he was leaving the mosque after offering Friday prayers. After this incident, the accused managed to escape.
41. Israrullah Khan Gandapur – 2013
Israrullah Khan was the Minister of Law, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Human Rights in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly in 2013.
On October 16, 2013, Israrullah Khan Gandapur was busy meeting people at his house in Kalachi area of DI Khan when a suicide bomber blew himself up, killing eight people including provincial minister Israrullah Khan Gandapur. About 30 people were injured.
42. Tahira Asif – 2014
Tahira Asif was elected as a member of the National Assembly in the 2002 general elections from Punjab as a candidate of the Muslim League (Q) on the seat reserved for women. In 2007, he left the Muslim League (Q) and joined the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
In the general elections of 2013, she was elected Member of National Assembly on the ticket of MQM.
On June 18, 2014, Tahira Asif was shot and seriously injured by two unknown motorcyclists in Lahore when she was getting out of her car.
43. Rana Shamshad Ahmad Khan – 2015
Rana Shamshad Ahmed Khan was a member of the Punjab Assembly for several times. Rana Shamshad Ahmed Khan was elected as a member of the Punjab Assembly from PP 100 Gujranwala in the 2013 general elections. He was also a provincial minister.
On May 31, 2015, Muslim League (N) Member of Punjab Assembly Rana Shamshad, his son and a party worker were killed by unidentified gunmen at Kamonki.
44. Shuja Khanzada – 2015
Colonel (retd) Shuja Khanzada was serving as Punjab Home Minister when he was killed in a suicide attack in Attock on 16 August, 2015.
45. Soran Singh – 2016
Soran Singh was the advisor on minority affairs to former Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak. Soran Singh joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf in 2011.
On April 22, 2016, Soran Singh was shot dead by unknown persons in his native Pir Baba area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Bunir district. Responsibility for the assassination of Soran Singh was also claimed by the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
46. Haroon Bilour – 2018
ANP Provincial Information Secretary Haroon Bilour decided to enter politics following his father’s footsteps, but on July 10, 2018, he too died in a suicide attack during the Awami National Party’s election campaign in Yeka Tut area of Peshawar. Died. The suicide blast occurred when Haroon Bilor entered the designated place to address the corner meeting.
In this blast, 20 people died and around 48 people were injured. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the incident.
47. Siraj Raisani – 2018
Mir Siraj Khan Raisani was the son of former Governor of Balochistan and former Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Raisani. Siraj Raisani was also the head of Balochistan Muttahida Mahaz which was later merged into Balochistan Awami Party. Mir Siraj Khan Raisani belonged to Balochistan Awami Party.
On July 13, 2018, a few days before the general elections, a suicide attack took place during the election campaign for the provincial assembly seat PB-35 Mustang.
In this attack, more than 128 people including Siraj Raisani were martyred and more than 100 were injured. Earlier, Siraj Raisani’s son Akmal Raisani was martyred in a bomb blast in July 2011, while Siraj Raisani survived the attack.
48. Ikramullah Khan Gandapur – 2013
Former Provincial Agriculture Minister Ikramullah Khan Gandapur is considered as one of the famous politicians of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On July 22, 2018, PK 99 candidate Ikramullah Khan Gandapur was killed in a suicide attack in Dera Ismail Khan.
Four people were injured in this suicide attack. Asrarullah Khan Gandapur, the brother of former provincial minister Ikramullah Khan Gandapur, was martyred in a suicide attack on October 16, 2013, the day after Eid.
49. Maulana Sami-ul-Haq – 2018
Maulana Sami ul Haq was one of the great religious and political leaders of the country. He was also a member of the Senate twice from 1985 to 1991 and from 1991 to 1997.
On November 2, 2018, unknown persons barged into his house in Rawalpindi and stabbed him to death.
50. Syed Ali Raza Abidi – 2018
The leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan, Syed Ali Raza Abidi, was shot and killed outside his residence by unknown gunmen on a motorcycle on December 25, 2018.
51. Shahnaz Ansari – 2020
Shahnaz Ansari belonged to People’s Party. Elected MPA twice. On February 15, 2020, Nowshehro had come to attend her brother-in-law’s funeral in Feroze, where a firing incident took place over a land dispute, as a result of which she lost her life.
