There was a marriage ceremony of Walima and my friends and I were standing outside the wedding hall. The son of one of our friends was getting married. There were barely few people there as it was quite early. We preferred standing on the roadside to wait and welcome our other friends instead of sitting in the hall.
After sometime a rickshaw arrived. Stopped nearby. An old friend of ours, a retired Professor who had also been the Principal of various local institutions in and around Lahore, Pakistan, got off the rickshaw and tried to pay the rickshaw driver his rent. But the rickshaw driver instead of taking his rent, touched his feet and denied to take the money.
Our Professor friend refused and insisted. We went ahead and inquired what the problem was because we saw them arguing. “I have travelled on his rickshaw, but I don’t know why he isn’t willing to accept the fare from me“, he explained.
“Son, you brought him here in your rickshaw,’ I added. ‘It is your right to get rent; why are you not accepting that is being paid to you?’ Amount was reasonable.
Sir, he (our friend Professor) does not recognize me, he remarked. “I’m here because of his prayers and hard work. He was my Principal at such-and-such a college. I will never be able to repay his kindness and compassion. Today, Allah has given me the opportunity to serve him, so please do not deprive me of it“.
His remarks appeared to be the interpreter of his actual and genuine emotions. It was quite appealing to me. This is a sign of respect for the teacher. I told him it was alright; don’t take money from him, but park the rickshaw and join us for the tea. We had tea together at a nearby tea shop after he agreed.
We then insisted on giving him money as a reward but he refused to accept it. We stressed that we are similar to his father and that refusing to accept payment from him is not a good thing. We insisted made him to take our payment. He was a straightforward individual. Gone happily. The blessed student of the respectful parents.

I was driving my car and heading somewhere with the same Professor one day. While turning in one area our car’s wheel got punctured. The automobile slowed down and ultimately stopped. There was a genuine puncture that was visible to the naked eyes. In front of me there was a petrol station, but that was at a little distance. I got to the petrol station.
“Brother, my punctured car is standing in front of you,” I told a young man at the shop. “Open the wheel, bring it in, and puncture it”. He stated that it was my responsibility to bring the automobile here, and that he would merely fix the puncture. I wanted him to open the wheel because it was their usual activity and would have been simpler for him, but difficult for me as I am not habitual to it.
During the conversation, the owner of this shop stood up and stated, “Sir, it is not our duty to tow the car; you should start it and bring it over here”. Too much air will cause the wheel to blow out. I said there’s the automobile in front of your shop though at a little distance, there’s a small puncture, be kind enough, and bring it, nothing bad will happen.
During this period, he returned his attention to the automobile and began rushing towards it as it was an emergency situation. I was wondering what happened to him when he noticed our vehicle and my professor friend, who was also a rickshaw driver’s teacher, standing nearby.
The owner of the puncture shop reached out and touched his feet and stood with his hands tied, Professor, I am your student, recognized. The professor also recognized Shabbir and hugged him. Met with great warmth and compassion. Asked, Shabir, why are you here? The answer was received, Sir, Allah has done a great favor to me with your prayers. This is my shop in front of you. You give the key and come with me.
In a few moments we were sitting in the petrol pump owner’s room. Shabbir introduced himself that he is my teacher and his friend. I am who I am today because of their prayers and hard work. Thereafter tea, we got up and the car was ready to drive.
After sitting in the car, my friend said that the poor students of small colleges are running for the same jobs and if they get reasonable employment, these people are content to live with patience and gratitude. I never sit in a bus. As the conductor turns out to be my student. Sometimes, the driver is my student. If I ever go to an bread beaker (Tanoor, Oven), I find that the baker is also my student. He gives free bread to me by force, which I don’t like. It is not that my disciples are not in good positions. There are many but I don’t like to go and meet them myself. As their respect seems to be status oriented.
They want me to come their and receive their respect. In fact, they have to do photoshoots and show the world that they still have some respect left. Sometimes in a big gathering, when a teacher and one of his famous students look at each other. Then the honorable student shakes half his hand from a distance so that no words can be expressed about his fear and arrogance due to going forward to meet the teacher.
The behavior of our society is strange. Who gets a position or rank and those who benefit from it take it to such an extent that most of them forget their time of studentship.
There are probably some judges, generals, journalists, bureaucrats, and prominent individuals who sincerely appreciate and value their professors. They meet with complete dedication and respect. When they meet the teacher, they descend to the level of a student. However, most people’s attitudes are disheartening.
In this aspect, upper-class kids stand out the most. Possessing a negative outlook. But children from middle class homes, middle and lower middle class never hesitate to respect the teacher. They run towards their teachers when see them from far away.
A colleague of mine used to say, “The person who is respected by his parents and elders of the house, comes to respect the one who has been brought up by his parents in a good and pure environment. He learns to respect his teachers and every elder. He who does not do this, surely there is something missing in his home environment. Or else the teacher is one who could not give anything to his student”.
